Fishing Times for Oak Orchard Creek near Albion, New York Plenty of salmon are spawning now in the higher flows and some of the post spawn zombies will be flushed out along with lots of other weeds and debris. Bass fishing in Sodus has been excellent. "On the Water" Media Group and host, Chris Megan with his film crew from East Falmouth, MA were at the Oak today catching an early brown trout following the morning rainfall. So no big change in flows yet in the Oak. Theres no significant icing anywhere that we are aware of. Up in the gorge, Mike Rzucidlo of Niagara Falls was at Artpark on Tuesday and caught two small walleyes and eight small bass on jigs. Everything is wide open to fish and its going to take a cold snap to get things iced back up again. Some rain on the order of a 1/4 inch fell last night but not a big change in trib flows. They scored 4 king salmon (17-20 lbs) and a trophy sized steelhead weighing in at 16 lbs. Fishing pressure not bad, as mentioned above we may be in a bit of a lull between ending salmon efforts and starting brown trout efforts. The other area smaller tribs are prob going to try and open back up from previous icing with high and dirty flows. Fish for perch in Sodus Bay near the north end breach, next to Bonnie Castle and Oak Park on the east side and the west side next to the old malt house. The state access fees will be WAIVED during this period. Hopefully the fishing pressure overall is likewise spread out like the fish. with an atomik crinkle green fly took our biggest king of the day. Fishing pressure is real light I saw just one car on the Oak. Flows in the other area smaller waterways did bump up slightly from the most recent precipitation but seem to be sliding back to medium ish for now. Our best set up was a 10 white double crush glow Spindoctor with A-TOM-MIK glow warship twinkie head. Upstate and Western New York Fishing Report - October 21, 2021 Bass action is spotty. The more the water temps drop, the more active the trout will become. The brown trout action in nearby tribs that was pretty good is a little slower lately thanks to the lower and clearer flows. It was so good we turned two doubles on the same rod, and caught a Coho on a meat rig that was dragging on the surface in the prop wash. Last night at dusk I had no problem finding some Kings crashing and boiling around at the Bridges area on the Oak and even a few at Point Breeze. To the west at Johnson Creek, flows are medium and mostly clear with reports of some brown trout hookups. The Port Bay pier (small) is at the end of West Port Bay Road and the Sodus Bay pier (long) are places to cast out heavy spoons. Flows in the other area smaller tribs are low and mostly clear with some icey conditions. Nearer the dam and just downstream should show a few more fish. Fishing pressure looks more like the end of November than the beginning of November for this mid week period so far. But with cooler temps this week, the water temp has finally started dropping. No quick start to the salmon action yet. Not a whole lot of reports coming back in for the Oak but now with flows that are a little more easily drifted guys should be into a few browns or steelhead. Flogging one spot like at the Archers Club may not yield more then off and on action. Forecast for the end of week/begin part of the weekend is for another mixed bag precip storm with good chance for accumulating snow here after possible start as rain. The forecast ahead for end of week and Christmas weekend looks challenging. Good chances for fresh fish action ahead for this begin part of Mar esp as higher and more stained flows may come and go. The new lodge is convenient to eastern tribs like Sandy Creek. Lakeshore conditions should likewise be wide open if any hardware chuckers were so inclined to make some casts. Hike and hunt around the smaller waterways in the lower flows like at Sandy and Johnson and you should find some browns too. (Some fresh salmon are still likely to be in the mix easily thru November). Chance of rain showers thru the mid week on warming temps and an expected area-wide accumulating snow end of week on cooling temps. It looks like some of the weather we missed out on thru the earlier winter is coming now in the later winter. (Deadline for the Open was Monday, 6/7). We are living and experiencing all the fishing action directly or thru trusted reports of other die hard anglers as it happens. After that for end of week and weekend, the forecast is back to cold temps and another round of measurable snow. Total snow cover in the immediate area may only be 6 inches give or take, but the snow is wind swept bare in spots or drifted in feet otherwise. There is some icing especially in downstream slow water spots and some bank ice. As a few post holiday reports come in it sounds like guys have had some better steelhead action. Be sure to check out some of the smaller tribs like Four Mile and Keg Creeks. Any future rise in flows should perk up the action for fresh fish so well hope the upcoming forecasat brings that on either with rain or snow and then melt off. Flows in the Oak are slightly high with water color about 1 2 ft of slightly stained viz. Look for calmer winds on the backside of choppy Lakeshore conditions that leave that semi stained water in range of the pier head and land lubber caster. Despite the cold, a few diehards have been out there scoring on a some smaller browns and a few fine looking chrome steelhead. Temps forecast today in the 40sF and a little bit cooler tomorrow with a chance of rain/snow showers later Wednesday. The week ahead looks mostly clear with seasonal temps and then colder again toward the end of the week.
