Sometimes they damage developing buds. Too much nitrogen grows a big plant with no blossoms. Panicle-type hydrangeas should be pruned in late winter to keep them from becoming overgrown.

Keep plants in good form by cutting out old, non-flowering branches at ground level.
And those that bloom on new wood should be pruned before new growth begins in spring. These plants are at least thirty years old. Hi Norman, If you are unsure what type of hydrangea you have it is best to wait until after it flowers to prune it.
I know that is a trait for annuals but thought I'd ask. Smooth hydrangeas can be pruned back to the ground in the fall or early spring.

Did they die back to the ground this spring? Prune established plants minimally but immediately after flowering to allow flower buds to establish for the following year.

(North of Houston, TX) and my oak leaf absolutely loves my yard. The Endless Summer® Collection of remontant (reblooming) hydrangeas developed from H. macrophylla usually needs no pruning. I am finding it quite an adjustment to go from where things grow so easily to trying to sort out what will thrive and what won't. My other blue hydrangea is a lacecap-type, called ‘Let’s Dance Starlight’, but instead of the huge, mophead-type of flower cluster that ‘Endless Summer’ has, the lacecap hydrangea bears a flat blossom made up of many small, fertile flowers surrounded by a few showy, sterile flowers. The best time to move your hydrangeas is in late fall or early spring when the plants are dormant.
You might consider giving the plants some winter protection like a wire cage full of leaves.
I try to place peony rings that have wire criss-crossing on top early in the season and let the plants grow up through the wire. My personal solution is to cut a lot of the bigger flowerheads for bouquets or to dry for winter arrangements.
