why are stamford schools so bad
Reporting on a Hillary Clinton address to National Education Association teachers, Politico education reporter Caitlin Emma tweeted this remark from presumptive Democratic presidential nominee, Hillary Clinton. These are the kind of schools you find in totalitarian political systems, such as Stalin’s Russia or Mao’s China. Why can’t school be a place where teachers taught slowly, treating their students as equals and engaging with them in meaningful conversations. I had a great experience overall. I think child hood obesity is on the rise and we need more awareness to this issue. I’ll get the A, I’ll push myself, but at what cost?
Even many non-religious folk seem to think, ‘Where’s the harm?’ I think we suffer from the anaesthetic of familiarity when it comes to religious schools. These two stories and Secretary Clinton’s statement on tests share something in common, namely that school is a system where the student is fodder to feed the machine, rather than the product itself. Stamford School has a strong reputation for success, from academic excellence to outstanding achievements in music, drama, sports and adventure. When you do that apples to apples comparison, Stamford schools do not look “bad” at all (at least at the elementary school level, which is all I've looked at). If the political versions of such schools are clearly toxic, why are the religious versions acceptable, even desirable? My experience is that students enjoy challenges that are authentic and meaningful. The very nature of what we ask them to do and how we ask them to do it seems to be harmful, and yet our response to this damage is to provide more resources to buff them up and get them back in the game. I have always been the type of person to read a book about ‘Ancient Greek Mythology’ or ‘A-Z animal facts’, simply because I want to learn, and I hope to continue being that person. socioeconomic variety alot of parents in Stamford and Norwalk send their kids to private schools in surrounding towns. And religious beliefs are often highly political. . The state's academic results — abysmal by just about any measurement — don't improve as the children grow older.
They teachers and administration really wanted us to succeed in life and in college. The internet, the library, our peers. They’ll shove useless information into your head as fast as possible, “it’s okay if you don’t understand it, just memorize it and get an A on your exam!” The exam? We foster within our boys a sense of personal responsibility, service to the community and leadership, underpinned by a pastoral ethos which places the well-being of the boys at the heart of all we do. Portraits of political leaders beam down from classroom walls. But that doesn’t mean that learning has to. In 2016, 9 percent of its students scored proficient on the state’s math test. Most of my best friends have come out of the Stamford school system. I have heard these same sentiments from my students, that they need the help, otherwise they’d fail out. But how? I suspect many will look back in a couple of hundred years’ time and be similarly baffled by our currently very relaxed attitudes towards religious schools. What would be our attitude to the arrival of such schools? How long will we treat the symptoms without examining the underlying causes? Be the first to know.Get our free daily newsletter.
